Let’s be honest here.. At some point or another we have all left a little to be desired in our skin care game.
Whether it’s from not knowing the best technique, thinking we can’t afford the “right” products, or just being too lazy to wash our face before bed (There’s that Honesty again!).
I see you nodding your head in agreement, but don’t worry, no judgement here! We are just here to point you in the right direction!
Here are a few tips to help you get the glowing complexion you’ve always dreamed of:
1. Find your skin type.
Of course everyone’s skin is different, but most people fall into one of the following categories: Dry, Oily, Combination, Sensitive or Normal.
2. Choose the right cleanser.
If you suffer from mild breakouts, a good option can be an over the counter wash with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If you are already using prescription acne meds, it’s best to go with a gentle, non-medicated cleanser. Good, timeless options include Dove (unscented), Cetaphil or Neutrogena. Harsh soaps will only irritate your skin.
3. Cleanse well, but Gently.
Using your fingertips, be sure to wash your face well, and don’t forget the jawline, neck, and in front of and behind your ears!
PRO TIP: Wash at night also if you wear makeup, or get extra dirty/sweaty during the day.
4. Toners and Astringents.
These can help remove excess oil, tone and hydrate, or fight blackheads and blemishes. For already Dry skin, use a hydrating, alcohol-free toner.
5. Acne treatment medications.
Different types can be obtained either by prescription or Over The Counter, and are usually either in gel or cream form.
A good moisturizer can be beneficial for even those with acne or oily skin. These can be found in creams, but gels and lotions typically feel lighter on the skin.
Minimum of 30 SPF is best. Can sometimes be found already in a good moisturizer.
With any of these steps, you may need to try a few different options to find the product, or combination of products, that works best for you.
But once you narrow down the routine that you like, consistency is important. So keep up the good work!
Other common advice to help with those pesky breakouts include:
- Don’t pick at your skin, it can cause scarring.
- Keep hair products, like hairspray and gel, away from your face to avoid irritation.
- Don’t smoke. It can make your skin dry and yellow.
Don’t forget! Good cleansers and moisturizers are not only important for the skin on your face, but the rest of your body as well.
The skin is your body’s largest organ, but also it’s first line of defense against disease and infection. So needless to say, it’s important to take care of all of it!
Clear, beautiful skin from head to toe is going to radiate confidence, which has its own wonderful side effects. Just wait and see!
On a not so fun, but very important note...
Be sure to ask your doctor if anything seems abnormal, and always keep an eye on freckles and moles if they appear to be very dark or changing in any way. These can be signs of serious issues, like skin cancer, and should be addressed as quickly as possible.
